Costa Rica: 100% Clean Electricity Is Real

The Country That Proves 100% Clean Electricity Is Possible

Costa Rica has quietly proven that a fully renewable power grid is not a dream but a working reality.

While most of the world debates how to cut dependence on fossil fuels, Costa Rica has already done it. For years, the Central American nation has generated all of its electricity from renewable sources, combining hydropower, geothermal, wind, solar and biomass into a diversified matrix built around its natural geography.

This did not happen by accident. Costa Rica invested in technology specific auctions and programs that let citizens generate their own power and sell surpluses back to the grid. Between 2006 and 2013, the country attracted more than US$1.7 billion in renewable investment, with a record US$600 million in 2013 alone.

The payoff goes beyond emissions. Clean energy lowers fuel import needs, cuts national costs and can shrink household tariffs by up to 15%, all while protecting the biodiversity that fuels its tourism economy. Costa Rica stands today as a global benchmark, proof that the energy transition is a matter of planning, investment and political will, not utopia.
